It wouldn’t be Easter without over-indulging on chocolate eggs and putting a proper dent in your liquor cabinet. Four whole days of guilt-free, holiday-approved gluttony, washed down with glass upon glass of whatever you can get your hands on. Trouble is, your choice of treat doesn’t always go so well with your choice of poison. The humble hot cross bun
It’s worthy of more than just fulfilling your Easter breakfast needs and being washed down with the traditional morning cuppa. Consider this an afternoon delight of a different sort: toasted HCB slathered wtih butter and, if absolutely necessary, your desired preserve-style condiment, paired with a crisp Blue Moon White Belgian-Style Wheat Ale, finished with a slice of orange. You read correctly, orange slice. If you haven’t been initiated into the taste sensation that is Blue Moon, you’ll love this intro. Pairing the flavours of the fruity hot cross bun with the heightened citrus aroma of your white ale will go down a treat, perhaps beyond this long weekend.
The Cadbury Creme Egg
Everyone has tried it. Most people love them. Some could take them or leave them. But it’s really always been about “how you eat yours”. The question remains, have you paired yours with a refreshing glass of Chardonnay? The Devil’s Lair Hidden Cave Chardonnay is a winner for the subtle honey yogurt and rich nougat notes that complement the creamy egg centre. Make sure to serve as cold as possible; the not-overly-acidic array of white stone fruit finishes the palate, cleansing the feel of chocolate mouth that will prepare you to go another round. We’d say enjoy in moderation, but… it’s Easter!
The dark chocolate Lindt bunny
You can usually get through this holiday with an abundant collection of gifted (or re-gifted) Lindt bunnies. With the dark chocolate bunny responsible for converting many a milk chocolate-eater into a dark chocolate-eater, the perfect accompaniment to help you ‘struggle’ your way through all those darn bunny gifts exists in the form of a lovely drop of Pinot Noir, serendipitously named Fat Bastard. This particular drop is light enough to merely act as an extra in your chocolate show. With cherry, strawberry and wild raspberry supporting the delicate tannins and smooth finish, it’s a pleasant way to help you get from ear to tail.

Unless you’re a mad white chocolate lover, the brand of egg is somewhat secondary to what the heck you’re going to wash the flavour from your mouth with. Strangely however, there are people who enjoy this flavour, and for those, we’ve found the perfect tipple to pair with your treat. La Boheme Act Two Rosé is a can’t-go-wrong drop that even the most cynical of white chocolate eaters would appreciate. The red fruits and strawberries give it a nice kick, but it’s the hint of marzipan that makes this wine a perfect match.
Caramel chocolate eggs
More and more, we’re seeing the emergence of gourmet treats, and this Easter will be no different. On a basic level, the caramel chocolate egg has been the foundation for many an incarnation of the gourmet egg, so pairing this one came with some degree of ease. The general consensus? Champagne! Well, any sparkling wine for that matter. But seeing as this is an occasion, a lovely bottle of H. Lanvin & Fils is a great entry-level Champagne that actually hails from Champagne, France. Far from complex, the dry style and lean citrus aroma is a smashing chaser for the salty caramel sticky Easter treat.
Despite almost having access to Easter treats the day after Christmas these days, it’s still an occasion worth celebrating, and therefore, worth the effort of pairing your favourite treats with a complementary adult beverage. Don’t let the kids have all the fun and belly aches this Easter – the grown-up version is way more fun.
